Beat the heat: 5 tips for outdoor workers

Exposure to rising temperatures can be dangerous for your health and well-being. When working outside, take precautions to protect yourself from all heat-related illnesses with these helpful tips.

1. Wear sun block

UV rays can be very damaging for your skin without any protection so it is important to wear sun block with SPF coverage so your skin doesn’t burn.

2. Drink plenty of water

It is important to hydrate yourself when working outside. Water and sports drinks are good options. Sports drinks supply the body with electrolytes that are key to staying energized. Avoid caffeine when working outdoors as it dehydrates the body quickly.

3. Wear a hat and UV rated sunglasses

These help protect you from harmful UV rays while also helping keep your body slightly cooler than if you were to go without either in the heat. Your head absorbs

the heat and moves it to the rest of the body and a hat will block this from happening.

4. Cool off

When taking a break, cool off in the shade or an air-conditioned space. You need to give your body a chance to recover from the heat.

5. Recognize when you’re feeling ill

Educate yourself to recognize the signs of heat related illnesses so you can take the proper precautions. Dizziness, cramping, headaches are just some of many signs that tell you when your body has been exposed to high temperatures for too long. If left untreated, minor illnesses can develop into conditions requiring emergency care.

The combination of heat and humidity is a serious threat to your health so learn to beat the heat by using these tips when working outdoors in the summer.
